AN EFT Masterclass: Fighting for a Safer Connection

Online for the Irish EFT Community

Saturday 26th – Sunday 27th June 2021
9:30am – 5:00pm Daily

Research shows that intimate partner violence is rather frequent, even more so in couples seeking couples therapy. However, the subject of domestic violence often remains hidden for the therapist. These couples are often refused couples’ therapy unless they have undergone a primary treatment for violence.

The premise of this workshop is that the underlying strong, heavy negative interaction patterns are paramount in the violence. These patterns undoubtedly present a particular challenge for many therapists. What is often remarkable is the fact that many of these couples want us therapists to work towards a safer relationship, where they can stay together and where the violence stops. This poses the important question… how can we do this when violence is often seen as a contraindication for couples’ therapy and EFT? Based on new scientific knowledge about intimate partner violence and their experience, Lieven and Jef worked together to come to a better understanding of this most challenging relational drama.

In this workshop, we outline a theoretical roadmap, demonstrating how we can understand intimate partner violence from an attachment focused point of view. We also explore how EFT be used to help these couples create a safer and more fulfilling connection with one another. We outline specific interventions to use and discuss several important topics including; assessment, de-escalation, the attachment meanings of violence, and the self of therapist.

We will work with video material, role play, personal exercises and make space for conversations.
The workshop offers a mini roadmap that can be inserted into the larger EFT map for couples’ therapy.
Ideally, participants should have a basic training in EFT or should read relevant basic works that we can build on throughout this masterclass.
